You can spend anything from £300 to £3,000 on a laptop computer and spending too much on a laptop is almost as bad as spending too little because you can waste your money either way!

That’s why we are happy to give help and advise you before you buy a laptop from us.

You need to think carefully about what you intend to use your laptop and whether in fact a laptop is what you need at all!

Many people think laptop computer first only because they just like the idea of a “trendy laptop”. Sometimes a PC (personal computer) may be much better suited to your needs and will always be much cheaper than laptop!

BETTER AND CHEAPER

If you need to use your computer away from home (or the office) then a laptop is essential although these days a mobile phone will often provide all the resources you need when you are out and about.

If a laptop is never going to leave your office /home then maybe a PC would be a better and cheaper choice.

If you are going to a use a laptop mainly for accessing the internet then you don’t need a lot of RAM (Random-Access Memory) - the most common computer memory used by computer programs to perform tasks.

But if you are going to use a laptop for writing letters (word processing) or keeping simple accounts or movie-making then you need more memory.

Computer memory stores data or programs (sequences of instructions) on a temporary or permanent basis.

If you intend to use your laptop for gaming then you have to have the best laptop that’s available because of the laptop resources you need for gaming.

We can advise on whether a laptop is best for you.

HANDLE WITH CARE

A notebook is the smaller option of the two (with a 10.1 inch screen) but we generally recommend the larger laptops, particularly the Fujitsu Siemens range because in our experience you are more likely to experience problems with other makes.

If you buy a laptop then you need to handle it with care!

The screen is the most vulnerable part of a laptop and the hard drive so picking it up by the screen or leaving things on the keyboard will damage it. Dropping things on the keyboard is lethal! It destroys the hard drive because that is where it is located.

If, once you have purchased your laptop computer, you want to upgrade it then there is some scope to do that. But of course it is not as easy to upgrade a laptop as it is a PC.

You don’t have to buy the most expensive laptop on the market - you can buy the cheapest one available and still get what you want, it just depends what it is that you want to do with it.

It is easy to waste you money buying the most expensive or the cheapest laptop - that’s why we are happy to help and advise on the best laptop for you.
